Anderson Mayor's Cup Report
Showing up in force for the Anderson Mayor’s Cup and the inaugural Great Lakes Pro Series races paid dividends as the Evolution Karting Team won
7 class victories, with 4 wins in the Mayor’s Cup Saturday and 3 victories Sunday at the new location for the event put on by the Anderson
Sertoma Club.
Saturday’s biggest winner was new team driver Kyle Landon, who had been worked as a mechanic for the team this winter and
earned a ride. Kyle responded by coming from last on the grid due to his late entry to win the Yamaha Can Medium class with a pass on the leader two
laps from the checkered flag. Kyle also won the Yamaha Pro Race, this time taking the lead early and dominating the field.
Returning team
driver, Cole Mathewson, won the TAG Senior race on his CRG chassis. Two days prior Cole had pins removed from his right foot, following surgery 6
weeks ago to repair 4 broken bones in his foot suffered in a crash in Ocala, Florida. Cole commented, “It hurts more to stand and walk than
drive, especially since it’s my right (accelerator) foot”.
The final victory Saturday was Kurt Mathewson’s win in 125
Masters Shifter, who beat out teammate and 2nd place finisher Jason Lee both on CRG chassis.
On Sunday, the Great Lakes Pro Series took over
the track for that series first race and the Evolution Team again took several wins. Cole Mathewson repeated his win in TAG Senior, but the race was
a close fought battle with Evolution teammates AJ Codalata on a TOP-KART and another new team driver, Brandon Doris, battling for the top spot the
entire race until Codalata’s ignition wire broke two laps from the end handing the win to Cole Mathewson with Doris taking second.
In
Masters Shifter Kurt Mathewson repeated his win from Saturday, and Jason Lee won the Stock Moto class to complete a very good weekend for the
team.
The new location in the parking lot of a City owned former GM plant turned out to be an excellent track for the racers and spectators
alike. The Anderson Indiana Sertoma club made a huge investment in the race, and karting in general, with the purchase of plastic barriers to replace
straw bales in most of the critical areas making the track much safer for the competitors. Evolution Karting would like to thank the Sertoma Club,
Terry and Shirley Riggins and all the workers who helped make the race a very successful event.
Evolution Karting features CRG and Top Kart
chassis. The shop is owned and operated by Kurt Mathewson and Garrick Miller, long time national racers. You can visit Evolution Karting at 312
Gasoline Alley in Indianapolis, or visit their web site at www.evolution-karting.com
