Race Report: Evolution Karting Great Lakes Pro Series

Evolution Wins GLPS 100 Lap Stock Moto Race

Evolution Karting drivers Kurt Mathewson and Jason Lee teamed to win the first every Stock Moto endurance race held in the Midwest at the Great Lakes Pro Series sanctioned event Saturday July 19 th at New Castle Motorsports Park. Mathewson and Lee completed the event nearly ½ lap ahead of the second place team of Voytek Burdzey and Tommy Mahr.

Jason Lee qualified the Evolution Karting CRG Chassis in 6 th position but got a huge hole-shot from row 3 and made an outside move around the outside in turn one to take the lead at the start. Lee held the lead for the first 15 laps before surrendering the lead to the Tyler Spitler/Jimmy Simpson team and then slipped to third behind Burdzey/Mahr. The top three teams pulled well ahead of the rest of the pack while staying in close contact with each other. The trio became a duo when the Spitler/Simpson team had a drive gear bolt come off, stranding their kart far from the pits and falling several laps behind while they replaced the gear.

After the first round of pit stops Kurt Mathewson took over the Evolution CRG and came out of the pits with the race lead. Mathewson held the lead throughout his stint, while Burdzey came to within a few seconds of the lead before the second round of pit stops began. Burdzey pitted first from second place with Tommy Mahr taking over the wheel. The Evolution team called Mathewson in to the pits after Burdzey pitted but seeing that he still had fuel in the tank, Mathewson stayed on track for several laps, building the gap from second place. When he finally pitted the Evolution team only needed a partial tank of fuel for the remaining laps and emerged from the pits with a 15 plus second lead. Lee drove the third and final stint and drove to the win nearly 30 seconds ahead of Burdzey/Mahr. The first two finishers were the only karts on the lead lap.

The Evolution team completed the 100 laps in 1 hour 37 minutes, stopped twice for fuel and ran the entire event on the same MG FZ tires.

Evolution Karting would like to thank Terry and Shirley Riggins for putting on a great event, after a full day of Great Lakes Pro Series races, which made for a very long, but fun day.
